Tropical Reef Shipyard (TRS) is proud to announce our teams participation in the comprehensive five-day, Navy Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Arafura familiarisation course.
Our team really enjoy learning about the engineering pedigree of a new vessel. This intensive training program is designed to equip our personnel with an in-depth knowledge of the ship’s systems, ensuring we are fully prepared to support the sustainment and maintenance of these advanced vessels.
Arafura Class is a class of offshore patrol vessels built for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) designed by Luerssen Australia. Each vessel has a gross displacement of 1,640 tonnes, and measures 80 metres long, with a beam of 13 metres and a draft of 4 metres. Propulsion comes from two MTU 16V diesel engines rated at 4440kW each. The vessel uses variable pitch propellers to create a top up speed of 22 knots.
The familiarisation course covered all critical aspects of the OPV Arafura’s engineering systems. Importantly, our team gained hands-on experience and insights direct from the builder, Luerssen; from contractors working on this specialty vessel and from Navy experts. This further enhances our capability to deliver top-notch sustainment services to these vessels long into the future.
This training initiative underscores our dedication to maintaining the highest standards of service and operational readiness.
As Cairns gears up to welcome the first OPV sustainment period, Tropical Reef Shipyard is committed to providing exceptional, ongoing support to the Royal Australian Navy.
